The University of Cologne, one of the leader universities in Germany, defines itself as a 21st century cosmopolitan and leading research university. Founded in 1919, this institution is among the biggest in Germany with more than 4600 teachers and researchers and almost 50 000 students. It belongs to the U15 group, an association of fifteen major research-intensive universities in Germany.

The University of Cologne is active in all major scientific domains, but has been especially successful in the domains of law and economics, social sciences, humanities and health sciences. While strongly involved in the city and region life and identified as an important actor at the national level, it has always promoted the further internationalization of studies, teaching, and research and cultivated international academic exchange among the academic staff, as well as students.

For the University of Cologne, the Department for Digital Humanities (IDH) is directly involved in the ARTEST project. The IDH was founded on 19 July 2017 by the Faculty of Arts and Humanities of the University of Cologne, combining professorships existing since the 1990s. The first consecutive study programme in what is now called digital humanities was established in 1997. The department has a broad expertise related to innovative combinations of STEM methods with the various subfields of the Humanities.
